How to Use & Style Thrifted Baskets in Your Home

If you love finding thrifted baskets while you’re out shopping; you’re in luck because today I’m sharing all the ways I use them functionally within my home!

The idea for this post actually came from a viewer on YouTube who asked if I could tour my house and show the different ways I use thrifted baskets – I thought it was a wonderful idea, and it was interesting to look at all the baskets I have accumulated and incorporated into our home in a different light.

I was actually a bit surprised to find that we had almost FIFTY baskets being used around our home.

Read on and I’ll break down what we use our baskets for, room by room!

My Thrifted Basket Home Tour

I’ll do my best to include pictures of the baskets I’m sharing about, but some are located in parts of the house that aren’t often photographed!

You can see those shown in the video above if you’re curious and don’t find a photo referenced below.

I will also say, the majority of the baskets throughout my home are thrifted, but there are a few I found and bought new – I’ll share below which ones those are!

I hope this post serves as an inspiration and helps to equip you to know how to use & style thrifted baskets throughout your home!

Being able to use baskets as beautiful pieces of décor that also serve to help organize and disguise less beautiful items is a win-win, in my book!

Let’s Begin in the Kitchen:

First, my French Market bag! This was one of the ones that I purchased, from my friend Phoebe at the Maple House Collective in Snohomish, WA!

This hangs behind our kitchen porch door and is used often for shopping and picnics.

On the counter, I like to hide my magic bullet smoothie maker in basket as well. I highly recommend disguising small kitchen appliances like this when possible for a more vintage feel.

Other kitchen baskets include:

  • Our vitamins – tucked away on a shelf in our cabinets
  • Spare Trash bags – near our garbage and recycle cans
  • Cloth napkins – his is another one we keep out for easy access. This same idea would work well for wash cloths, dish towels and hand towels.
  • Our grab-and-go snacks are stored in another basket that helps mask the modern packaging.
  • Inside some of our kitchen drawers we have baskets for first aid supplies and smaller items like tea.
  • Another portion of our cabinets holds a basket of mason jars, and a second basket beside for the plastic white lids I use to top the jars.

One of my favorite styles of baskets are the BYHOLMA baskets from IKEA. They are very well made, and their shape means they fit really well alongside other baskets or items on shelves and inside cabinets.

I have some of our coffee supplies stored inside one of the BYHOLMA baskets that I’ve had for years.

In our Pantry & Laundry Room…

  • A large thrifted apple bushel basket that I thrifted for $5 holds our spare pet food.
  • I use a wire basket that I was gifted by a neighbor to collect our chicken eggs. I like that the wire is really easy to clean if we have any egg-accidents.

When we first received that wire basket, I used to store our fruits in it, and realized pretty quickly that the weight of the fruit at the top of the basket was enough to press the lower fruits into the wire edges and it was damaging the fruit and causing it to spoil faster. Eggs are a much better fit!

  • I have about 4 lined baskets that hold an assortment of lesser used items such as cookie cutters and cake decorating supplies.
  • I use a $1 garage sale find basket to hold our empty toilet paper tubes which we stuff with dryer lint. I use these as in-a-pinch fire starters.
  • Big oval laundry baskets
  • Rectangular picnic baskets – One of them is used to hold all of my soap making supplies.

Thrifted Baskets in our Living Room & Fireside Room:

Near our window seat, I have placed a thrifted basket that holds old bed sheets. I use these to cover the window seat cushion since this is one of our dogs’ favorite places to lay during the day.

Having the spare sheets nearby makes it easy to change it out every few days for washing.

This basket was blue when I found it at the the thrift store, but I loved the size and shape, so I brought it home and gave it a wood-look makeover! You can read the tutorial all about how to do that HERE.

Near the front door I have a sweet wheeled basket that I originally purchased for my children’s nursery 20 years ago. Since they’ve been grown it has been a great spot to drop off shoes, but it certainly holds less shoes in it now than it used to!

On my secretary desk I have this tiny round basket that originally held a park hill candle. The candle has long-since been used up, and the glass inside broke, but I now line it with a silver julep cup that I use as a vase for a sweet little faux flower arrangement.

Near our record player, we have a thrifted basket to hold our records. I love using baskets to camouflage necessary items while still keeping them easily accessible where they’re needed most.

In our Fireside Room, I have a few more hanging woven bags. I know these might not be considered baskets by some, but I love that they are also functional and beautiful. They can be styled for any season.

Above our dog crate for our puppy, I have a small basket that holds all of her toys. She loves to stand on the couch and “shop” through the basket to choose her toy each day.

Our older dog, Keirra loves her basket bed from Hayneedle – even though she’s a bit big for it now.

Near the woodstove I keep a basket of aesthetic birch logs – my family knows these aren’t the ones to use for burning!

Thrifted Baskets Found in our Bathrooms:

We keep razors in a small basket on a shelf above our toilet.

And another basket holds our spare toilet paper rolls. I find it easier to use a basket to “display” them than to find a place to hide them all away out of sight.

In the upstairs bathroom, our laundry hamper is an old wired & wheeled basket.

And I use an assortment of small baskets to hold things like cotton balls and wash cloths.

When I see round baskets like this – I love using them to hold plants!

Since we have a claw-foot bathtub upstairs, we also don’t have a lot of storage for bath supplies. I store things like our wash-cloths and the bath-tub stopper in this hanging basket nearby.

And the baskets we use in our bedroom:

On top of my husband’s clothing armoir we have a big oval basket that I keep our sheets in. On one side I have a faux olive tree in another round basket.

And on the other side, I have a large round basket (from Target years ago) that holds my large fabric bolts and carpet samples.

You’ve probably seen this a time or two in the background of my YouTube videos.

My husband’s nightstand has two shelves with baskets on his side of the bed.

And at the foot of our bed, we have a large wicker trunk that I got for $10 at a garage sale. I added leather straps to it to make it feel more vintage, and use it for storage.

One of my more recent finds was a under-bed storage basket that I found on Facebook Marketplace. It was originally from Pottery Barn, and I’ll be using it in my children’s rooms that we’re now outfitting as guest rooms since they’ve moved out!

In my closet-office, I have a wire basket on my desk to organize receipts and stationery and bills.

And another wire basket in a nearby shelf that I use to hold my fabric swatches and samples.

And that’s that! You’ve made it to the end of the tour showcasing the thrifted baskets I use throughout my home!
