Updating a Bedroom for A New Season Of Life

What started as our daughter’s bedroom has changed over the past seasons of life with children that are now grown up – come along as we review the journey of updating this bedroom to fit our family’s needs through the years.

Upstairs in our 1906 Farmhouse there’s an attic type space with two conjoined rooms.

I distinctly remember walking into this space when we were first seeing inside the house and knowing this room would make a great bedroom & school room.

And so that’s what half of it became – as if it were straight out of the pages of an early 2000’s Pottery Barn catalog!

The other half was my daughters’ pretty pink princess room.

And this was the way the room stayed for quite some time… but as they do – the kids got older!

Once we no longer need this space for schooling, we expanded so that each side of the room was a space uniquely styled for each of the girls’ inspiration.

The school room side became a mixture of horses & bohemian for my then 15 year old.

And the pink room became a modern English Cottage for the 19 year old who was taking local college classes and wanted to have a dorm-like experience.

Flash forward a few more years – and as almost empty-nesters, we turned this space into our Anne of Green Gables inspired guest room.

The second half of the room (formerly the school room) has been used mainly as storage for the past years – but I have some plans to make it a more formal continuation of the guest room so that when we have visitors they have more space for both sleeping and dressing. (Stay tuned!)

Styling it For Our Present Day Needs

For this summer, one of our daughters is staying with us again temporarily, so I decided to hop on this year’s berry trend to freshen the room with some bright and SWEET decor.

Some of the elements are understated – like vintage red linen books and a beautiful glass water carafe & cup.

I also love having my French bouillotte lamp up here for more light during the evenings, especially as it starts getting dark earlier.

And because I know it will be asked – this wallpaper is Grey Toile from Livette, and the trim paint is French Grey by Farrow & Ball.

Due to the slanted walls, windows, and doorways, there are not many places I can hang art in this room, but I did want to do a sweet berry gallery wall as a little updating in this room for the summer.

This wall above the headboard near my custom sconce was the best place for it.

The horizontal print is from Hobby Lobby! I love the gold frame, the subject matter, and how they made it look and feel like a real oil painting.

The two raspberry prints were ones I found in Brimfield when I was there most recently with the gals from my Bespoke Design Retreat!

I used plain linen for the matte and painted two matching bamboo frames (similar on Etsy) I had in Colonial Red from my favorite brand of spray paint – Rustoleum 2x Paint & Primer.

Last – but certainly not least… My Strawberry Paint by Number!

This was a project I created and did for the first time with my gals at the Bespoke Design Retreat – but I loved it so much, I created a FREE Printable for you!

Click below to get yours – it’s the perfect DIY project for summer; lovely to work on in your own free time, OR plan and do it together as a group with your sisters, best-friends, or bible study group!

I hope you enjoy painting it as much as we all did!

Across the room, I tucked this sweet vintage German syrup label in the edge of the mirror. This was given to me as a gift by a sweet friend.

And on the desk, I left the last charming nod to the strawberry trend – a little envelope I had left over from a project.

And the very last detail as I was updating this bedroom, a bouquet of faux flowers I made years ago. (I have a full tutorial on beginning floral arranging HERE.)
