Adding sweet finishing touches to your Christmas decorations can have a huge impact on the overall look and feel of your home for the holidays! Today I’m sharing my favorite tips on doing just that.

I think one often one of the biggest missed opportunities for adding in finishing touches is not decorating, even in small amounts, through the different living areas of your home.
Now, I don’t hit every one of these areas every year, but I do feel like they boost the impact of my decorating significantly when I do make the effort to add just a little bit of Christmas charm to these spaces.
In your home, there might be different spaces that you choose to focus on, but the goal would be to add at least a little touch to the places that you and your family spend time throughout the day.
I always decorate my front porch, living room, and fireside/family room, and often add a few elements to my kitchen, but these are the spaces I added to this year that were the cherry on top for my Victorian Christmas design:
I’ll share more details about each one below.

Bathrooms are easily forgotten when you’re planning your holiday decor, but it’s a room of the house that everyone needs to use, and will even be seen when guests are over.
But don’t get me wrong, I don’t think going all out is needed! Just hints of Christmas & winter flare can make a big difference.
In our downstairs powder room I went simple.
The green class candle on the counter that reminds me of a vintage candy dish, and my new DIY pine-cone wreath from the Handmade Holidays series. I added two layered green ribbons, one in silk and one in velvet – both purchased from May Arts for a pop of Christmas color.
Above the toilet I added a small faux greenery wreath that I had gotten at JoAnns Fabrics in their post-Christmas sale a few years ago.
I love the contrasting textures of the velvet next to the rough pinecones.
If you live in a second story home, and especially if your bedrooms are on a different level than your living areas – just think how many times you’re travelling up and down the stairs throughout the holiday season – you might as well make them festive!
I purchased two 30 foot cedar garlands from my neighbor’s son who is a boy-scout and chopped one up to use above my kitchen counters, but the other one got draped across the top of this giant mirror at the top of our stairs.
I added droopy bows with long tails in gold velvet ribbon and a set of golden bells that I found on Amazon in each of the top corners.
I used my trusty command hooks to secure the garland.
Adding garlands and other holiday elements to mirrors throughout your home is a great idea, in general – not just in hallways.
On our bar cart that I keep at the top of the stairs I have one of my white soup tureens that I used as a temporary planter for my forced paper-white bulbs! (This is another project I shared about in the Handmade Holidays group!)
(If you’re new here, you might not have ever seen my washable stair runner – you can get all the details HERE.)
And finally, in each window I placed a battery powered taper candle in a golden candle stick holder. I’ve been slowly investing each year in additional battery powered candles, and have been picking up the candle stick holders through out the year at various thrift stores.
My goal is to have every window in the house lit with a candle in upcoming Christmases.
Last but not least, I decorated my daughter’s bedroom with a small tree!
I used a crocheted table cloth for the tree skirt and used some of the cream flocked bulbs that I made this year, along with dried oranges and my clip-on battery powered candles.
I started putting a Christmas tree in my own bedroom a few years ago, and I don’t know that I’ll ever go back to not having one. It adds such a coziness to the room, especially during the long hours of darkness we have in the Northwest during the winter months – I’m glad to give that same ambiance to my girls!
I hope these tips are a fun inspiration to look for new places to add little finishing touches to add that bit of wow to your Christmas decor.
Merry Christmas from my family to you & yours!
