Have you ever looked at display beds in store windows and magazines and wondered what made them look so luxurious? Here is a break down of the simple components I use to make the perfect bed.
I have always tried to make our bedrooms very restful and soothing places. They need to be getaways within our own home.
Not too many colors, not too dark, not too loud. . . and the beds need to be the focal point of the rooms with lots of layers and cozy textures, so you just want to dive right in.
My favorite way to make a bed a focal point is by using layers. Not only do they add interest, but they allow for handling temperature changes.
And I may have mentioned it before, but I am a bona fide fabric snob. If I am going to splurge on decor, it is going to be on my fabrics, at least on the ones that I will be touching throughout my daily life. And my bedding would most certainly qualify.
So, here is the formula I use for making a bed feel like the perfect getaway from the stresses of life, complete with layers and soothing fabrics.

Sweet dreams are made of these. . .
Trundles and sleigh beds don’t need dust ruffles, but this would go down first if you can see your box spring. I like to safety pin them to the top corners of the box spring so they don’t slide around.
My favorite sheets are 100% cotton or 100% linen. They are cool to the touch and get softer with each washing.
I prefer white sheets so they can be thoroughly cleaned as needed to keep them always looking pristine without fading or bleeding.
I like them kind of wrinkled and casual. Or maybe I just tell myself that because I don’t want to take the time to iron my sheets. Ha!

While I love a fluffy feather duvet as much as any girl, I have recently moved to using “down alternative” comforters to help keep the dust mites at bay.
Duvet covers are easy to change out with the seasons and can be more cost effective than comforters.
When I make a bed I love to turn down the top sheet and duvet to give enough room to pile all the pillows on the fitted sheet. It lends to a very finished and welcoming look, like a fancy hotel. I adore quilts and they will work for this, but nothing beats a big fluffy duvet that is folded part way down.
A lot of decorators recommend two standard size pillows for a twin size bed, four for a queen and six for a king. But, because I am borderline ridiculous, I say three for twins, six for queens six to nine for kings (depending on your pillow size)!
Pillow shams are beautiful, but usually pillowcases are more economical. So, don’t worry if you only have pillow cases.
Stand them up on end with at least one decorative pillow centered in front.
I love a quilt folded in quarters (the long way) across the foot of the bed, but if you don’t have that right now a beautiful throw draped across one corner is lovely, too.
