Do you love starting the day off with a carefully made bed? Sometimes if I get up late, this is the first task I throw out the window. It’s a tiny defeat that I don’t like to have right off the bat. But, what if I told you that I figured out how to make a bed in 60 seconds flat?!
Now somedays I don’t even feel like I have an extra 60 seconds. But, most days I really have no excuse to not invest a measly one minute towards a more tidy room.
A while back, I was revamping my morning routine, which is one my classes in my Finding Time to Hold Dearly course. Considering not even including bed making in my morning routine, I searched online for a faster way to get it done.
It seems that people don’t really know how to do this, I saw a few youtube videos. But, they were just hurrying when they made their beds, I didn’t see anything super efficient.
Then, I stumbled upon an old forum online. One person was saying that bed making is OCD and you shouldn’t start because you will go crazy and end up in a mental institution. I’m not joking! Can you even believe that?
I feel like a well made bed says to the world and to myself that the day has started and things are in order. The whole room looks better all day and a well made bed is so much more comfortable to crawl into at night. So, obviously, I am from the camp that would like to find a way to make a bed in 60 seconds.
Finally, I dug around long enough in that forum to find some old military advice. And the best part is, it really works!
How to Make a Bed in 60 Seconds
Here is my messy bed. . .
- First, while you are still in bed, sit up and throw the pillows onto the floor. Evenly distribute them, I have six, so I toss three on each side of the bed.
- Now, sit in the middle of the bed with legs outstretched. Pull all the covers up as high as you can and slide out one side.
- Finally, starting on one side, walk all the way around the bed ONE TIME. As you work your way around, straighten the covers, tuck in the sheets, replace the pillows, etc. until you reach the other side.
TA DA!! There, that’s better.
No more excuses.;)

This is such a good idea! I’m going to try it. I make my bed every day. It has about the same bedding as yours: five pillows, a sheet and a duvet. It takes too long to make, but I don’t want to change my bedding, nor my standards. I will apply your method! Thanks!

I Love this! I saw a video of a college commencement speech that gave the student the advice of making their bed every day because it starts the day off on a positive note by accomplishing the first of many task during the day they will face. Thank you for showing us a quick and easy way to accomplish the task of making our bed! ?

Oh good! I hope it starts you off on a great day.
I learned long ago not to share covers with my bed partner. I think more unnecessary discussions start because of this. My wife and I have different needs. She is going through perimenopause, so she just uses a single sheet. I, on the other hand, might even use a quilt in the middle of summer. It isn’t worth fighting over. Consequently, we don’t make the bed. And, we’ll stick with what works!

Sounds good to me, pick your battles, I say!
I almost feel like the entire house is messy if my bed is unmade. I also had my kids making their beds at a very young age. It really does help the day to start off feeling more accomplished. Even if I wash the sheets and am putting them back on super late in the day, I put all the pillows back on even though I may be jumping back in in an hour! Thanks for your tips!

I know what you mean! That is so good that you are instilling the habit in your children, too.
Oh my goodness! Throwing your nice clean pillows (where you put your face all night and breathe) onto the floor with millions of bacteria, dirt, dust, pet hair, etc.??!!

Haha, well, don’t forget that pillows, faces and floors can be washed fairly easily. But, do what works for you, maybe toss to the end of the bed or onto a nearby chair.
I have to make my bed. I always feel if the dishes are done or in the dishwasher and the bed is made the house looks clean, especially since my house is so open. I like how you show how to make it so quickly. No excuses for an unmade bed now.

YES!! The dishes. and the kitchen counters!
I have done this for yrs but I toss my pillows to the foot of the bed instead of on the floor

Good for you! I had never heard of it before.

I’m going to try this! I hate it when I’m too lazy/rushed/whatever to make my bed. It just makes the room feel sloppy!

What a gorgeous bed you have!!! I wouldn’t want to get out of it in the morning. 🙂 I always make my bed when I get up. I hate going to bed in an un-made bed at night. Plus, if I make my bed in the morning, I feel like I’ve started the day being productive. Thanks for your handy tips!
