How to Style a Christmas Mantle

Have You Wondered How to Style a Christmas Mantle? Follow this tutorial for a festive mantle that packs a punch and doesn’t fall flat!

We haven’t had a proper mantle in our home for 10 years. Not since our last home, actually. We just added this mantle recently and you can see in another post how we installed it.

We have a woodstove and I normally will hang the stockings on the stair railing or on a bookcase or hooks or something, but to hang them on the mantle is a real treat.

The thing is, I’ve been so excited to decorate it for Christmas and the day has finally come.

Here are some suggestions for what to add to your mantle to make it look really natural and stunning at Christmas time.

Wood. Even if you have a mantle and no fireplace at all, I still suggest adding in some beautiful pieces of firewood.

They look gorgeous in a crate or a basket.

I prefer birchwood, you can even paint logs white to make them look like birchwood.

Furniture. Next, I suggest adding a beautiful piece of furniture next to the mantle, preferably some kind of accent chair.

I added in my French accent chair that I recovered a couple of years ago you can read about the process here.

Color. I kept it simple and focused just on incorporating grays, silvers, greens and whites.

Christmas Tree. If you are able add a tree next to your mantle it will give some really great dimension to the space. This is my favorite faux tree!

I’m all for simple tree decorations and garlands are my go- to. I found these beautiful mercury glass ornament garlands and I think they are just stunning.

Stockings. Stockings are a no brainer -so classic on mantles!!

As I was working, I could not figure out what was missing.

I felt like it was really flat looking.

Finally, I pulled out my little glitter Christmas garland and hung it. it was the perfect touch, I love how it mimics the garlands on the tree and the silver trees in the cloche!

Little Faux Trees. I added in four little faux trees that I got for five dollars apiece at Target in the Wonder Shop.

**Resist the urge to decorate just straight across your mantle. You want to have highs and lows, different textures and layers going on. I put two trees up on top and then on the opposite side, put two trees down on the floor.

Vintage Books. Noticed that my books are going to different directions, as well, for interest. Add in a tea cup and saucer to make it extra cozy.

Cloches. If you have any cloches or even cake stands, they can be pretty with bottlebrush trees, little village houses and fake snow. And some fairy lights are always good for a whimsical touch.

Garland. For a final layering effect, I chose different types of greenery and worked them together. I had an asymmetrical look going, where it cascaded it off one side.
