Can you even believe we are talking about summer decorating? The porch is the first place I like to start on our Summer farmhouse decor and I will show you why.
If you have hung around here for more than two months, you will know that I like to think of an inspirational theme to get me started as I decorate for each of the seasons.
This year’s theme was “nautical”. But, when I say pick a theme, I need to caveat this idea. Don’t go hog wild with your theme, just use touches of it and then bring in some practical pieces and sentimetal pieces.
When my sister was little, she mentioned at one point that she “liked cats”. And somehow that got translated into “Susan loves, adores and must have EVERYTHING she can possibly own that is cat themed.”
For at least a decade she opened gift after gift from unsuspecting family members who were sure they had found her the perfect gift- cat themed, of course. It got taken way. too. far! It’s still a family joke, thirty years later.
This is what I mean by -don’t let your theme become overpowering. You don’t want the place to look like a gift shop from the beach just because you want to bring in a little nautical twist, if ya know what I mean.
For my farmhouse summer porch, I brought back the wicker chairs I used last fall, added in a steamer trunk for more seating and a whiskey barrel!! How’s that for nautical?
I ended up sending a few things like a jar of seashells and a small sailboat into the house to dilute the ocean/ sailer vibe going on out here and brought in some sentimental pieces.
Adding in some vintage tennis rackets and crochet set helped to bring in the look of summer activities.
Next, I wanted a way to address the blazing heat of summer. This porch gets particularly hot mid -morning, so I pulled down my living room curtains (!) and hung them outside to create some more shade.
By using some cheapo curtains rods, I could easily hang them in strategic places for a uniquely, dreamy look that I may recreate every summer- we love it that much!
Finally, I added in some ferns to create a fresh, cooling atmosphere and set out some french lemonade and goblets. They are mostly for looks, but once I did it for the pictures everyone in the house was asking for a glass of lemonade.
So, there you have it- a quick breakdown of the thought processes I use to decorate my porch in the summer. Thank you so much for stopping by, you don’t know how much I appreciate my blog readers every day, you make all the work of blogging sooo worth it!
