How to Upgrade a Basic Christmas Wreath

Here are my professional tips to help you upgrade a wreath from very plain & basic into a beautiful custom piece you can be proud of all season long!

I share ALL of the details in my quick wreath workshop video on my YouTube Channel, but I’ll share the basics below, as well as lots of photos to inspire!

How to Upgrade a Wreath Like a Professional

No 1. | Use a wreath form

This can be either a classic greenery garland, or a more basic brown grapevine wreath – but having a form with some dimension to it as your base is one of the best tips I can offer.

I do not recommend using the wire forms – they don’t give your pieces enough to grab onto!

No 2. | Vary your Textures & Colors

Add different types of greenery, (broad leaves, needles, branch lengths & elements) and ones with elements like pinecones & berries.

No 3. | Forage what you can find outside!

If you, or a neighbor have holly, cedar, bitter-sweet, boxwood – these make great additions!

Supplies & Sources:

  • If you’re working with fresh greenery, you’ll want to use garden shears like THESE.
  • If you’re working with faux greenery, a pair of wire cutters will make it much easier to trim & segment pieces – especially if you’re re-using a larger garland.
  • Some Floral Wire
  • I got a lot of my faux greenery at Hobby Lobby – check for when items you’re wanting are on sale!

I love incorporating my Mom’s wedding dress into my decor, and for Christmas the past few years I’ve just added this simple “fa-la-la” garland. It’s such a sweet touch!
