How to Make a Gather Garland for Thanksgiving

Looking for a quick & easy decor project? How about this DIY Thanksgiving Gather Garland using supplies you probably already have on hand?

Let’s say, hypothetically, Thanksgiving is right around the corner and you’re wanting one more piece to add some holiday character to your home. I’ve got the perfect project for you!

I was inspired by this Gather garland years ago, and made it during a year where I really didn’t have the bandwidth to decorate as much as I might have otherwise liked.

It was inexpensive, simple, and I had most of the supplies I needed to put it together already on hand! It was a quick win that year – and it’s become a staple in my Fall and Thanksgiving decorating ever since.

Materials

  • Wooden letters to spell “Gather” | Amazon or any of your local craft stores will have these. Mine are from the Walmart Christmas section.
  • Gold Glitter- I am using the color Champagne from Joanns
  • Elmers Glue or Mod Podge
  • Sponge Brush
  • Printable Oak Leaf (Click HERE to use my free printable copy!)
  • Cream Cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
  • Ribbon for Hanging | Mayarts is one of my favorite sources for satin & velvet ribbon!

Tutorial

  • Use your sponge brush to add a thin layer of elmer’s glue or mod-podge onto your first letter. Dust with the glitter, and tap off excess. Repeat with remaining letters and let them dry.
  • Meanwhile, print out about six oak leaves on the cream card stock.
  • Stack 2 plain pieces of card stock under each printed piece and cut out three at a time. I used about 18 leaves for my project.
  • Once the letters are dry, hot glue them to singular leaves.
  • Arrange the other leaves along a ribbon for hanging and add in the lettered leaves. I bent the non-lettered leaves down the middle to give a little more shape to the garland.
  • Glue everything in place with the hot glue.
  • Hang on mantle, window, armoire, mirror, bookshelf, bed frame, etc.
  • Enjoy!

| Gather Garland Update |

I’m often asked in the comments here on the journal or over on YouTube how my different projects last after years of use, so I wanted to give you an update on this Gather Garland!

It’s hanging on beautifully (pun intended), and I’ve truly used it every year since I first made it!

This year I added a pair of sweet white flowers at the edges where I attached it to my counter top over my bookcase. I love the added detail they provide!
